Allow Me to Introduce You to My New Texas Friends

One of the cool things about living in a place where you didn’t grow up is being introduced to creatures you’ve never met before.  Take for instance, this little guy who dropped out of our Elm and onto our porch a few weeks ago:


Usually we just find their brown shells scattered in the yard after summer is long gone.  So it was a treat to meet this guy in person.

And these guys are….well, let’s be honest: creepy.  At least that’s how everyone I’ve talked to feels about them.  The official word on the streets is that they’re called “hummingbird moths.”  They, well, look like moths.  And they are as large as hummingbirds.  See for yourself:
