Back in 2007, my husband and I planned a road trip from California that routed us through Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado and Utah. When we arrived in Greensburg, KS, we gasped in astonishment. We witnessed the aftermath of an EF5 tornado that had demolished the town four months prior. The devastation was paralyzing. Home sites were nothing but debris and four front steps. Enormous pieces of sheet metal twisted into the barren branches of trees. We planned to stop for gas, only to find that all the stations looked like this one:
